Why the MEDA Films Development Initiative ? Print

In all countries of the MEDA region*, film professionals confront similar problems in developing their projects. These problems are often related to a lack of training in two key professions: screenwriting and production. In these countries, it is not unusual for film directors to also be writers and producers; this situation is not a choice, but rather it is imposed by the environment.

A number of renowned directors, among them Elia Kazan, repeatedly assert that: “A good film is three things. A good script, a good script, and … a good script.” A good script is first of all a good scriptwriter. But it also requires the talent of a good producer who knows how to provide the writer with the best moral and material working conditions.

A good producer is more than a financial manager. S/he is also the first viewer of a dreamed, yet-to-exist film. A producer is a professional who has to be sensitive to the project’s artistic arguments. A good working relationship between the producer and the writer is essential. This is why we believe it is important to bring together these two professionals in joint sessions, so they can get to know each other better, communicate better and work together better.

MEDA Films Development’s (M.F.D.) objective is therefore to accompany producers and scriptwriters during the whole development process of a feature-length project, which we believe is the key to a successful film. The way this experience is conducted will ensure its feasibility, quality and success.
